Maxine is a virtual performer of free improvisation. Built to compose and perform musical ideas while responding to its sonic environment, the system is designed to fulfill the role of a human performer in an ensemble of improvisers.
First developed in 2010, Maxine’s design is based on my extensive observation of how improvisers interact with one another as well as my active engagement in the practice of free improvisation as a saxophonist. As such, the system is both a virtual musician as much as an ethnography of a particular form of musical and social practice.
